Is it good for you ??? what are the risks??, what are the benefits?? and does one outweigh the other?? The risks are quite well publicised, but not so the benefits ( and they are quite surprising ) would love to hear your opinions, will post some facts later,as i fear if i make it too long in the first instance no one will bother reading it!!

Under Aussie conditions 10 - 15 minutes exposure each day, (even on the cloudiest days..) is sufficient for Vit' D - so that isn't a concern for those of us who like to spend hours outside at a time.. Other pluses: the tan looks better; immune system is strengthened with adequate exposure (though, it can be depressed by excessive exposure.); sun exposure counteracts 'SAD' ( those "winter blues"/"cabin fever" effects, where people are depressed from the abscence of light over long dark winters..). The Downside/minuses : Skin cancer; Premature ageing through skin damage from excessive exposure and burning; (and, as mentioned above, too much of a good thing can depress the immune system, as well..).

True, it is relaxing and indeed sensual, but sunshine is also our main source of vitamin D, which is esential for calcium absorbtion and the immune system, Low vit. D has been assosiated with various auto-immune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, thyroiditis and crohns disease. whilst a plentiful supply of vit D has been proved to prevent the growth and spread of cancerous tumors, particularly those assosiated with cancer of the breast, colon, ovary, bladder, womb, stomach and prostate. weigh this up against the risk of skin cancer which affects 0.08% of the population of the UK per annum, and of these only 2% are fatalities, and so long as you use sun cream the risk is far lower, i'll take the sun anytime !!!!! PS the "feel good" factor that sunshine induces is a result of its affect on the peneal gland, "the third eye" which releases serotonin to the brain and makes you feel happy
